In 1969 Peter Hujar started Newspaper (later The Picture Newspaper) as a wordless picture-only tabloid dedicated to photography by New York legends such as Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Hujar, Man Ray and stars such as Mick Jagger, Divine, Grace Jones, and more. Richard Bernstein’s photograph of Mick Jagger as The Cowardly Lion was reproduced as a promotional poster. This is an actual print of a run of posters which would have been plastered around the cafes and nightclubs in the late 60s and early 70s New York. An important artifact of the first publications to recognize and promote alternative queer art.
